Certification

According to the WV Certification Board for Addiction and Prevention Professionals (WVCBAPP, Peer Recovery (PRSS) are individuals who have completed the requirements for certification, which carries the following requirements:

  • A statement of personal recovery. 
  • Individuals must have 500 hours of volunteer or paid experience specific to the domains. Volunteer and part time experience is acceptable if it is provided under direct supervision. Supervised work experience must be in the four PR domains. 
  • Individuals are required to have 25 hours of supervision specific to the domains with a minimum of 6 hours in each of the four domains. Peers must have supervision must have supervision at least twice a month by an organization’s documented and qualified supervisory staff.
  • The PRSS has a high school diploma/GED or higher, as well as 46 hours of education specific to the required domains. The 46 training hours must include 16 hours of ethics. Three hours of college credits are equivalent to 45 hours. Education, as defined in the manual, which the applicant provides to others may be used providing it is verified in writing by sponsoring school or agency.
  • Every two years, the PRSS must re-certify by completing 20 hours of continuing education, which includes six hours of NAADAC/NCC AP National Certified Peer Recovery Support Specialist (NCPRSS) specific ethics. 
  • The PRSS has passed the IC & RC Peer Recovery Support Specialist exam.
